I had the "Unable to validate game version" error, yesterday (it worked fine until then).
I tried the tutorial and this is what I got.
I'm running on XP Pro SP2

Is the game copied ? Or installed from CD's ?

Actualy i dont see how depatcher can affect worldedit.exe since it just copies old .mpq and some other stuf that has nothing to do with it.
If you recieved this error just now, it can be virus infection. It was already posted somewhere by Moonstar.
Here you have worldedit.exe with md5sum 2094a3a1c5e88dd4d65ce4f9c27956f

try full patch :)
Edit: check if patch file blablablaEnglish.exe is archived and if any other files in warcraft folder don't have "read-only" tag
