I've been buying new laptop 2 monhs ago, so I can tell you a lot of stuff. :)

1. Stay away from acer (loled up)

Processor: i5 or i7, no AMD crap or i3
Ram: 4GB and above
Screen: the most important part actually. 16" is already decent for gaming and stuff (15 is too small IMO), but when I was buying, I got 17.3", which is kinda imba. The only problem is, that it get's kinda heavy to carry around sometimes. :P
Screen resolution: 1600*900 or full HD, no less.
Graphics: 1gb memory, nVidia or Radeon not so important, maybe throw an eye on DirectX 11 support.
Disc: 500GB and above
OS W7 included is almost a must.

ANd also, it must be cool lookin, at least a lil. :)

Best way to check by specs on internet shops.

Up and down arrows keys-the reason I didn't get it. ^^

I'm really fond of the Vaio new series, they rock.

And they are not as heavy as the other ones

I'm just gonna say DELL m1530,
It's amazing how good it is for basic stuff, and 450euros,
search for its specifications, the only bad thing is it has no wireless adapter,
but you can buy usb wireless for 10 eu and solve ur problems :) or pay another 200euros for dell wireless broadband card :f.

also search for m1330, its smaller, but a lot more powerful with price of 1200eu :\,
those would be my choices if it was to me to buy one : ),
regards.

I have never been a fan of Dell either.
My suggestions remain HP, Vaio or a MacBook

From dell you might check for Dell Studio if you want some bigger screen.

@keka: low price means poor specs :)

Stop aiming at specs, aim for quality, he needs something that wont get overheated after 2h of gaming, battery dying after 3 months, whole pc dying after 1-2years ;)

Did this 2 models get any update? Cuz when reading on Dell's site, components are outdated (core 2 duo, ddr2, windows vista), also reviews were made in 2007/08.

If there is no new model out of this family, they're probably not even sold anymore.

Also

Review:Purchased computer spring 2008 (new and customized specs). Had a complete OS meltdown summer 2008. Bluetooth driver/hardware issue caused bluescreen errors and eventually forced me to reinstall OS and all software. No fun. Harddrive crashed fall 2009. Bought and installed replacement HD. Reinstalled OS and software. Battery life is about an hour. Touch pad is starting to lose sensitivity so I normally use a wireless mouse. Runs HOT. Have to use cooling pad.
This laptop has a lot of bugs/issues that are well documented online. Poor effort from Dell.
+500 negative comments and another 500 positive

Saying that some notebook has quality just by seeing the company names means nothing these days. You either have luck or you don't have luck. Mine is running fine for 3 months now and didn't melt down when playing latest games on high specs. Maybe tomorrow or maybe in 1 year I'll flame everyone for having a broken disk and loosing all data.

My dad's power supplier died after 1 year, and HP is thought to be quality company..

You simply can't know..
